The abundant rainforest on the northern West Coast, is a predator-free haven for wild game deer, particularly New Zealand's Red Deer population. Red Deer predominate in high numbers, largely due to the difficulty of the terrain, and poor accessibility conditions.

A permit is required for any hunting within the Kahurangi National Park, but the rest of the region is free game territory. Permits can be arranged through The Department of Conservation.
